UNT Distinguished Alumni Award presented to Jason West

CSE Alumnus Jason West ('96) received a Distinguished Alumni Award on April 20, 2012 from the University of North Texas. First presented in 1965, this is the university's most prestigious award. It is given to individuals who have achieved prominence in their profession, thereby reflecting a positive image of UNT.

Jason was a founding member of the Laboratory for Recreational Computing (LARC) in 1993. Dr. Ian Parberry, Director of the LARC, is pictured on the left with Jason on the right at the UNT Alumni Award banquet. Congratulations to Jason on receiving this award!

CSE Students present at Design Day on April 27

Computer Engineering and Information Technology undergraduate students will present their research projects at the UNT College of Engineering’s Design Day on Friday, April 27. All CENG students will participate in poster presentations in the hallways of Discovery Park from 9:30 to 11 am. Computer Engineering students will begin their group presentations at 11:30 am in the DP Auditorium, B155. Presentations by CSE Information Technology students will begin at 1:30 pm in the main CSE Conference Room, F223.

UNT designated as a National Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research

Dr. Ram Dantu, Director of the Center For Information and Computer Security (CICS) and Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has been informed that the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security have designated the University of North Texas as a National Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research (CAE-R) for the academic years 2012 through 2017. CICS is ranked as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAE-IAE) from 2003-2017.

UNT is one of 36 universities in the nation and one of four universities in Texas designated as CAE-R and CAE-IAE by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. The Center for Information and Computer Security offers research expertise in Internet-based technologies, protocol security, digital forensics, watermarking, cryptography, secured electronic commerce and secured mobile applications and VoIP security.

Dr. Barrett Bryant, Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has announced that three new faculty members will join the CSE Department in Fall 2012. They are Dr. Renee Bryce, Dr. Cornelia Caragea, and Dr. Rodney Nielsen. Dr. Bryce joins us as an Associate Professor from Utah State University. Dr. Caragea joins us as an Assistant Professor from the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Neilsen joins us as an Associate Professor from the University of Colorado. More details about our new faculty are here. We welcome them to our CSE Department at the University of North Texas!

Dr. Kavi’s NSF Net-Centric Software and Systems IUCRC wins Tech Titan of the Future Award

Congratulations to Dr. Krishna Kavi, Director of the NSF Net-Centric Software and Systems Industry/University Cooperative Research Center, for winning the Tech Titan of the Future, University award on August 24, 2012. This award, presented annually by The Metroplex Technology Business Council, recognizes educational institutions that encourage and support students in choosing engineering and technology-related disciplines as a preferred path. This award category spotlights DFW area higher educational institutions' tech-related curricula and incentives to perpetuate tech-related knowledge transfer. CSE Students Halloween Trick-Or-Treat

All CSE students are invited to Trick-Or-Treat from 10:45am-noon on Halloween, Wednesday, October 31st. Meet at the CSE Main Office where you will be provided with a bag and the opportunity to visit the faculty, staff, and research labs for fun surprises! The more the merrier, so feel welcome to bring a friend.

Enter the costume contest! Categories are: Most Creative, Funniest, Scariest, Best Student, Best Computer-related, and Best Faculty/Staff. Stop by the ACM/ACMW Trick-or-Treat event at any time between 10:45 - noon on Halloween to enter the costume contest!

Faculty Position in Computer Security Available

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of North Texas (UNT) is seeking candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level beginning August 15, 2013. The department plans to build on its existing strengths in Computer Security, including network security and intrusion detection, secure software systems, vulnerability analysis, and machine learning techniques applied to computer security. CSE Department celebrates 40 years

Alumni, faculty and staff celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at a banquet on October 26, 2012 at the new UNT Apogee Stadium. CSE Chair Dr. Barrett Bryant greeted everyone and introduced speakers Dr. Warren Burggren, UNT Provost; Dr. Costas Tsatsoulis, Dean of the College of Engineering; and Nelson Cichitto, BS 1989, whose company Avatier Corp. sponsored this event. It was a very special evening enjoyed by all who attended.

PepsiCo offers Undergraduate Scholarship

PepsiCo is offering a $1,000 scholarship for Spring 2013 to Juniors and Seniors who are majoring in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Information Technology with a cumulative 3.5 GPA.

Eligible students must apply for the scholarship at http://www.cse.unt.edu/PepsiCoScholarship/ before January 31, 2013.

The Undergraduate Committee will decide the winner. Lisa Reynolds was the recipient of the scholarship in Fall 2012. For more on her award, see this CENG article.

Happy New Year and welcome to the UNT Department of Computer Science and Engineering for the Spring 2013 semester! Among a number of exciting things happening this semester is National Engineers Week February 18-22. Please participate in the Career Fair on February 21, where a lot of companies will be searching for interns and full-time employees. Now is also the time to be applying to Graduate Schools for M. S. and Ph. D. programs, including ours (UNT application deadline is February 15). I would be glad to talk with anyone interested in furthering their studies at UNT or elsewhere. Please check this website and the student email newsletters that we'll be sending out during the semester for information on other planned activities this semester.
